Words of Affirmation

March 9th, 2010

The Five Love Languages is a book written by Gary Chapman who is an expert when it comes to relationships. He suggest that there are 5 love languages and each person has their own way of feeling loved. What are they you ask?

1. Acts of Service       2. Words of Affirmation           3. Gifts         4. Personal Touch       5. Quality Time

Example – When a man gives his woman gifts all the time to show her his love, he should be aware that her love language might be quality time. This means that all the gifts are a nice gesture, but she feels loved the most when he spends quality time with her. After my husband read the book, he told me, “It is a good thing that book is purple because if I had read this thing in high school, I would have been the man!”. Knowing a person’s love language is so important and your connection with them will be worth figuring it out.

What does this have to do with photography? Well, the love languages can be used with any relationships. You friends have a love language, your kids, your mailman, and yes, even your photography studio has one.

Today I came across a review from a customer who was so kind to take the time to write some words of praise for a review of our studio and those few sentences made a big impact on everyone. All too often, people have a great experience but they only leave a review when the business had a blip. All the laughter, smiles, funny moments, even the ones that are really sentimental never get shared. Here is the review:

We had our child’s first portrait session here for the growth panel- a series of photos from pre-sitting, sitting, and first steps.  We’re just at the first leg and so far we’re really happy. Excellent quality, personal attention,  and I love that this is a local family business, not a chain or corporation. I’ll update this as we go along.

PS they have really cool bookmarks available with your photo and you can have a name written in on it- it looks really sharp!

You might have guessed it by now, but our love language is words of affirmation. I wanted to say thanks to Diane for the praise. I also encourage you to leave us a little love note on our google site if you feel led to do so.

Break out the flip flops for beach portraits!

March 8th, 2010

I hope you have been able to spend time outdoors this past weekend. Mother nature has been playfully teasing Charlotte with sunshine and highs in the 60’s but still maintaining cool air that keeps us in jackets and scarfs. Parks, playgrounds, walking trails, and baseball fields will soon be filling up with Springtime activities. One particular location will be thriving very soon… the beach!

Southern Light Photography will be doing beach portraits in and around the Myrtle Beach, South Carolina area! The sessions will be available on Saturdays and Sundays only. More details will follow!

Never miss a moment with the new Proof Books!

February 24th, 2010

The new proof books are in! The 4×6, white spiral bound book has a frosted cover and holds around 30 proofs from the photo session. The first page has the customer’s name and the year of the session. Next, matte finished photos are in order from when they were taken and trimmed with a thin black border.  It reminds me of a summary of the shoot in a visual format, and it is absolutely adorable. When Cole’s mom reviews this series of images, I know it will bring a smile to her face by seeing all the fun Cole had from his stress free shoot! Below is part of his proof book.

What photography should be…

January 21st, 2010

Grant_08While checking out our archives, I came across a session we did last month that just about knocked me right out of my chair. I couldn’t believe I didn’t see these prints go out the door. I remembered talking with the mother on the phone about appointment times and the holiday schedule a couple of times, but I never had the opportunity to see the final images.

True emotions and feelings are a tricky thing to capture through a lens. To me, these images had just that. They were beautiful. Love, happiness, and a feeling of closeness is just oozing from these photographs. I enjoyed them so much, that I wanted to make sure you had a chance to as well.

Geese_0705

As I strolled up the sidewalk to the studio yesterday morning, it happened. What happened you ask… The first sign that the geese are back happened. I didn’t see them, but one had left its mark along the pavement in the parking lot. I didn’t expect to see them so soon so it took me a minute to realize what/who the mark belonged to.

This morning, they were not as sneaky.  Hanging out along the side of the studio were 12 – 15 geese. Peeking at the grass, honking, waddling around… some were sleeping, some were in off by themselves,  but then there was a small batch that would just stare off in to nothing for an awkwardly long time. Who knows what captivates their attention so much to require intense focus minutes at a time. I’m convinced they were wondering how to call to schedule their yearly group photo :)

A sweet a.m. surprise…

January 14th, 2010

What a pleasant surprise it was this morning when I arrived to my office to find a hand written card from Zac Rilley from Peace At Home and Margaret from the Parents’ Association of Providence Day. Both were letters of gratitude for participating in their silent auction.

We’ve received many notes similar to these from other organizations and everyone is just as lovely. I guess it just reminded how nothing truly compares to a thoughtful hand written thank  you.

Auctions and fundraisers are for a good cause and a great way to connect with your community. Spring is typically the kick off for most charities so be keeping an eye out for some out-of-the-box fun for you and your family by attending these events! We are blessed to be a part of them and I know you will be as well.

We had the joy of photographing the Skey family who had purchased a gift certificate from a silent auction. They were a wonderful family to photograph!

Thrilled to be Back

January 7th, 2010

It is our first full week back in the studio and the whole team is excited about the new year. What is on the books so far you might ask? We will be updating our Children’s program, revamping wedding prices and packages, diving in to more community projects, & my personal goal is to teach Suzy German. Of course, that one is a goal that doesn’t really effect anything but I don’t think its fair that only the bigger guard dog breeds get the opportunity to learn multiple languages. I will let you know how we progress.

We hope your Christmas was filled with wonder and your New Years is off to a magical start!

Round ‘em up & bring ‘em in!

November 10th, 2009

A two hour drive from Charlotte to Ashville awaits me for Thanksgiving day and I can already tell you what events are about to unfold. There are four key ingredients when it comes Thanksgiving.  1. Giving Thanks, 2. Family, 3. Food, and 4. Football.

If your family is like ours and the whole crew comes together only twice a year, take advantage of that time and bring them in for some family portraits. We still have space available for Thanksgiving weekend!

Portraits are a good change in the normal holiday festivities. We have the pleasure of updating the Willard family photo this year. Their family visited us in 2007 and with everyone back in Charlotte, they are coming in for an up to date session!

Show you care with a teddy bear…

November 9th, 2009

Our holiday special is officially under way and we are starting to see the teddy bears pile up! The new bears will be donated to the Salvation Army’s Women’s Shelter for Christmas in exchange for a FREE session and an 8×10 (a value of $129!).

All the Christmas cheer has caused me to tune in to Christmas tunes on Pandora. Last year, my husband got on to me about all the Christmas music I put on “his” aka our ipod. He made me narrow it down to 20, which was a tough decision for a girl who starts planning for the season in September!  Here are some of favorites:

Its Christmas Time Again – Jessica Simpson

Baby Its Cold Outside – By anyone, lol

Santa Baby – again, by anyone who wants to sing it!

Blue Christmas – Elvis Presley (halarious for Karoke too!)

All I want for Christmas is You – Mariah Carey

Mistletoe – Colbie Caillat

Have yourself a merry little Christmas – Judy Garland

Winter Wonderland  - Frank Sinatra
