Have you had your digital SLR camera for a long period of time? If so, you might want to consider a couple of things. Your five year old camera that proudly holds the name of “Old Faithful” could be decreasing in quality little by little and it is so suttle that it is hard to tell.
The biggest differences will be found in sharpness, color temperature, and focus. Take a look at photos from the past and compare them to the images being shot now. If you notice that your photos are having a green or yellow color cast, this might be a sign. Along with the actual camera body, another reason for these mishaps would be the lens. Each lens has sensors that can get a little out of wack at times.
So, now that we have noticed the problem, what is the solution? We have three options…
1. Preventative maintenance – RESPECT THE CAMERA AND THE LENS. When changing lens, do it in a timely manner to avoid dust and other air particles getting onto the censor. When traveling, use a camera bag, not a purse (ladies!). Jeff (Southern Light’s photographer) had a great tip about airplanes. He says to carry your equipment on the plane and put it on a pillow or blanket in the overhead bin to help absorb the vibrations.
2. Send it in to the camera’s manufacture for maintenance. Of course, there is a fee for this service, but it sure does beat spending a couple grand on all new gear when you can get yours fixed for one to two hundred bucks.
3. Pretend everything is ok and when the time is right, purchase a new one.
Happy shooting!
Lens 1
Lens 2
These photos were taken outdoor with one catch light. The original image is a 3/4 body shot. They have not been retouched in any way.
The difference is also shown in the eye lashes. Notice the seperation in lashes is more defined in the photo from lens 1.
Moral of the story, get your gear serviced!

Our niche is studio photography. When photographing indoors, we have 100% control of the lighting. It is a fun challenge to enhance every shoot with ambiance, mood, and style through proper lighting and posing.
The traditional pyramid pose is always a good look, but I wanted to share this portrait with you because it is different. Forget the cookie cutter approach to studio photography. Casual posing with different height and angles make it possible to add variety and show off the attitude and personality of the family as a whole.

1. Dresses that don’t bussel.
THE FIX: Have A Dress Rehearsal. Put on your gown and ask your matron of honor to help you bussel the dress. Next, pop in some of your favorite tunes and bust a move! You want to make sure the bussel will hold through the festivities of the reception.
You can also ask your seamstress or the boutique where you purchased the dress to show you how to do the bussel.
Get this taken care of before the big day so you will have both hands free to dance, toast, eat cake, and hug guests with and not have to hold up your dress the entire evening.

2. Shoes that are uncomfortable.
There is a way to stay classy and overcome this issue of uncomfy shoes. Check out these two options…
THE FIX: Break them in. House chores, girl’s night out, around the office, use any excuse to put them on and take them for a spin. It will be one potential issue neutralized because of a little preparation before you take to the aisle.
FIX PART II:The alternative.New sneakers with your wedding colors, cowboy boots, bold red strappy heels, something unique will portray a style, attitude, and be a great way to personalize your look! Remember, it’s your wedding, be different and stay comfortable at the same time. |

I do not get to help in the actual photo shoot very often. Whenever I do, I think it is the coolest thing in the world to see how families interact with each other, with Jeff, and the over all surroundings during the session. Occasionally, babies need extra time to warm up to us and the camera room. This little girl had about 5 minutes of uncertainty and from then on, she was a natural!
My office is beside of the proofing room and for about an hour, I could hear giggling and squealing while she and her mother were looking at their images. This is one happy 13 month old! It was an absolute pleasure spending time with her and her family.

Can you believe that these images are stored up in our computers and not being displayed any where! Jeff took these photos on a trip out to California last year when he was studying HDR.
The first one photo was taken at an observatory overlook. The second one is another HDR shot titled, “Glowing Cactus”. The third is “Hidden Valley At Dawn”. I love the exposure and the colors in all of these image.

Here is the review:
We had our child’s first portrait session here for the growth panel- a series of photos from pre-sitting, sitting, and first steps. We’re just at the first leg and so far we’re really happy. Excellent quality, personal attention, and I love that this is a local family business, not a chain or corporation. I’ll update this as we go along.
PS they have really cool bookmarks available with your photo and you can have a name written in on it- it looks really sharp!

The Five Love Languages is a book written by Gary Chapman who is an expert when it comes to relationships. He suggest that there are 5 love languages and each person has their own way of feeling loved. What are they you ask?
1. Acts of Service 2. Words of Affirmation 3. Gifts 4. Personal Touch 5. Quality Time
What does this have to do with photography? Well, the love languages can be used in any relationships. You friends have a love language, your kids, your mailman, and yes, even your photography studio has one.
You might have guessed it by now, our love language is words of affirmation. One of the best compliments we can get is a referral and that all comes for talking about your great experience here with us. I want to encourage you to leave us a little love note about the laughter, smiles, funny moments, even the ones that are really sentimental, on our google site if you feel led to do so. I also wanted to say thanks to Diane for the praise…. thanks Diane!!
